If there’s one city in the world that could easily bear all the crosses in the world, from cross-cultural over cross-fertilization to cross bench minds and crossovers, it must be Istanbul. Due to its dazzling history – being once the capital of the Roman Empire and the world centre of the Islam, not to mention Atatürk’s revolutionary contribution to the city’s cosmopolitan image – Istanbul gradually became a blend of Turkish, Anatolian, Ottoman (Greco-Roman and Islamic) and Western culture and traditions.
Logically, today, Istanbul brims over with creativity and related initiatives shoot up like mushrooms. After the Istanbul Art Biennial and the Istanbul International Film Festival, Istanbul now also has its own design week, which was held from the 29th of September til the 3rd of October. The Istanbul Design Week aims to introduce Turkish Design to the world, and focuses on Istanbul’s future in design and on urbanization problems.

Every other year in October, fashion lovers – from amateurs to professionals – (re)discover the heart of today and tomorrow’s Brussels’ fashion during the Modo Brussels Designers’ Trail. For three days, the city’s shop windows and secret spaces are handed over to creative talents in an artistic free-forall. It’s a unique chance to discover new talents in an informal (and inevitably irreverent) atmosphere.

Capping off Design September, the annual month-long celebration throughout Brussels of all things design, was the day-long symposium Graphic Design at City Scale. Staged at the art deco building Flagey on October 1, Graphic Design at City Scale brought together of a variety of design thinkers from around the world. Base hosted the event in conjunction with Design September, and selected the program of seven speakers.

During the first weekend of October 2010, the renowned International Arts Centre deSingel in Antwerp, Belgium, opened their long-awaited new building, designed by architect Stéphane Beel. The opening – entitled deSingel Art City – was celebrated with performances, concerts and exhibitions in all the halls and studios, together with the public and various performing artists.

Fall has officially fallen, and with it comes the autumn women’secret campaign.
We shot in London, at the beautiful Spring Studios, with photographer Jason Kibbler, stylist Joanna Schlenzka, and hair stylist Raphael Sally. The model was the lovely and bubbly Alison Nix.
Our art direction concept this season marks a first for women’secret: hybrid images presenting the same girl in various outfits and poses. … more

Yesterday, Base Brussels was filmed by TV Brussel, as a result of the Designers Open Doors, this weekend. This event allows the public to enter into the working world of Brussels designers. Sander was pitchforked into our spokesman, and did a great job. Watch it here.
Since 2009 Base has created the seasonal campaigns for Marie Jo, the luxurious brand of the successful Belgian lingerie company Van de Velde. Established in 1919 in a small corset workshop in the Flemish hamlet Schellebelle, Van de Velde has a long history of bra expertise. The grandparents stitched corsets, the parents made classic underwear, the third generation today designs luxurious, modern lingerie.
