Creative Lectures

Some believe that creativity is about getting rid of structure, and letting a thousand flowers bloom. At Base, we think that at least a minimum of structure is necessary to unlock people’s minds and generate fresher ideas. Our ‘not so typical workweek’ consists therefore of several key moments during which we exchange thoughts to keep up the creative work.

On Monday mornings, we kick off the week with our ‘challenge’ meeting, in which everyone picks a high-priority todo for the week.  Yes, a fresh start calls for a new challenge! This can be personal or professional: that one logo you want to finish, or going for a long run to get it going on. In this way, everyone also knows what’s happening in the studio.

Our Base Brussels team sits down together for our weekly homemade lunch, and recap on our challenges we started the week with!

Hannelore K.: In reminiscence to “Less is more”

So here I am on the train going home. Belgium that is. My family. For one day. When a sudden change of plans comes up: fashion is pulling a last minute trick on me again. I’m not writing to complain and will never do so. I’m writing to explain how the fashion world works. Some of you know, others do not (yet).

I’m Hannelore, member of “the old topmodels”. … more

Base x The Davis Museum, From Fred Sandback to Radcliffe Bailey

Work | 03/2/12 | add a comment...

This Base story starts back about two years ago. We had just finished redesigning the identity of Wellesley College when Lisa Fischman was appointed as the new director of the school’s museum, The Davis.

Looking to bring a new perspective to the museum, Lisa hired Base to redesign its visual identity. This first assignment involved design in all communication channels, from the main website (in fact, a site within the main Wellesley College site) to its integration into the space itself, a magnificent design by the world-famous architect Rafael Moneo. … more

Base’s Continuing Projects for Project

In 2010, Base was brought in as Project’s brand consultancy of record. Held bi-annually in both New York and Las Vegas, Project is one of the leading contemporary fashion gatherings…we say “gathering” because it has become so much more than the trade show it used to be. Outside of the obvious commercial aspect, Project offers up trend installations, collaborations, philanthropic initiatives and more.

With Project’s rapid ascent, we decided to further develop their brand identity to better reflect the multi-faceted event they have become. The primary gesture, a tiling of the initial logo, reflects the community aspect of Project where all aspects of the fashion industry converge. As with the prior three seasons, we’ve designed all communications (from look books to show guides to invitations) and signage.

CMA Proving to be a Huge Success

For years, The Children’s Museum of the Arts (one of the oldest children’s museums in the world… who knew?!) was located one block north of us on Lafayette St. We delighted in passing by during lunch breaks and seeing the kids at play.

Now in their new building on Charleton St, CMA is proving to be a huge success with the community, with some of Base’s kids having already attended numerous classes and birthday parties there. It’s amazing to see one’s work have this kind of real impact on the world around us. Great to hear kids point at the logo and say, “That looks like a kid!”. Great to see visitors know where they’re going when seeing our signage. Great to be a part of such a fantastic story.
