Besides running Micasa and Volume B, two Design international shopping meccas in Brazil, entrepreneur Houssein Jarouche doesn’t stop inventing. He is a DJ in his spare time and is now trying his hand as a designer. Houssein presents a small six-piece edition of his first furniture line at the Mostra Paste-up show, which will stay on display until the end of July at Coletivo Amor de Madre + Galeria Baró. Things We DON’T Like: Brooklyn’s New Signage System

An example of the new signage system found around Brooklyn. We are hoping for some sort of force majeure to take them all out
We really, really dislike when things are over designed. Which is why we are outraged about a good idea (downtown Brooklyn neighborhood signage) gone terribly awry. The situation is made worse of course by the fact that most of Base NY’s team live in Brooklyn and have to see this signage on a daily basis. Talk about pouring salt on a wound. … more
Base at the Heart of Project
Twice a year, Project puts on one of the best contemporary fashion trade events in New York City and Las Vegas for young, emerging, ambitious brands, artists, and designers. The New York event was held in a fantastic loft space on Soho’s Mercer St from July 17th-19th, 2011, on two floors with next season’s most sought after clothing styles, jewelry, and bags. The event attracts and features some of the most influential retailers and brands in an atmosphere and environment conducive to creativity, individuality, and community.
For the third consecutive season Base NY collaborated with Project to create the identity and key communications pieces for their event. Base also designed the Project show guide, website (coming soon), and map of the venue.
Ana’s Brazil: Inhotim
The Inhotim Institute, located in the city of Brumadinho, about an hour’s drive from Minas Gerais, is one of the largest outdoor centers of contemporary art in Brazil. There is a phenomenal private collection of large scale works by not only Brazilians but Americans and Europeans artists as well, such as Helio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Amilcar de Castro, Janine Antoni, Adriana Varejao, Larry Clark, Marepe, Matthew Barney, Olafur Eliasson and Tunga, just to name a few. Besides the diverse art, the botanical garden run by the Institute was designed by Roberto Burle Marx (one of the greatest modern landscape designers in Brazil) with a focus on native species. Inhotim is the tropical version of Storm King. It is one of the most amazing and inspiring museums in the world and is definitely worth a visit! For more information, click here. … more
