Min Lew, head of Base New York and DJ Stout of Pentagram Texas teamed up to design “Bright Lights”. The two, who will co-chair the event, organized by AIGA, will take place in New York City on April 19.

The American Institute of Graphic Arts, or AIGA, is the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design. As the profession’s most prominent community, AIGA’s goal is to bring design to the world, and the world to designers. From content that defines the global practice to events that connect and catalyze, AIGA works to enhance the value and deepen the impact of design on business and society.

“Bright Lights”, an awards celebration honoring achievement in design, is one the events organized annually by AIGA. The institute will recognize eight designers with the prestigious AIGA Medal; the highest honor within the design profession. This medal represents the range of contributions designers make to their clients, future generations and society-at-large through inspiration, thoughtful critique, social impact and the education of future design leaders. The 2013 recipients of this prestigious award are John BielenbergWilliam Drenttel and Jessica HelfandJonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-JonesStefan SagmeisterLucille Tenazas, and Wolfgang Weingart.

Base and Pentagram Texas teamed up to design the event, which will take place in New York City on April 19. Together, we designed a space to bring the recipients’ achievements into the spotlight, which itself became overarching visual theme we selected for the ceremony.  The AIGA Medalists are luminaries in their field, and this event spotlights their achievement and contribution. Light is also a metaphor for knowledge and enlightenment, which we translate literally with lights leading guests from dark areas to bright spaces. The decoration for the ceremony hall will feature a 31-foot wide graphic aimed to capture and translate the concept of spotlight. Another contribution from Base for the celebration’s identity is the invitation design, that of which also represents the idea of spotlight as you can see below.
