Amit Agarwal. First person to become a professional blogger in India.

In 2004 before Amit became a well-known blogger, he worked for banks such as ADP, Goldman Sachs & Merrill Lynch. He is also a personal technology columnist at The Wall Street Journal India and writes for The Financial Express.

He is a regular speaker for technology and blogging conferences. Microsoft awarded him the Most Valuable Professional award for five years in a row (2007-2011). In 2010, Amit launched India Blog School, a non-profit initiative that aims at spreading the blogging culture in India.

Base: First of all Amit, we wish you a very Happy Diwali (since the interview was done this day). In Wikipedia it says that you have been involved in advocating freedom of speech and participated to the end of internet censorship in India. Is this true? and to what extend is this censorship comparable to China’s ?

Amit: In 2005 there was a huge blog growth and many of these blogs were hateful blogs which contained bad words and swearings towards religion. So the indian government decided to take these few blogs down. Whereas in China internet is still controlled. For instance history is a very controlled point and if you try to type ‘Democracy’ in google you will find out there are no mentions about this.

B: Who do you target with your blog school?

A: There isn’t that much of learning in blogs. Anyone that can write an email can have a blog. There is no investment required for the maintenance of it, you just need a computer and an internet connection. It is easy to monitorize and if you are successful at it, you can even make money out of it with advertising or sponsors. My aim is to show that having a blog is actually easier than what it looks like. Any person with free time can have a blog: retired people, students, men, women, it doesn’t matter.

B: Can you explain us exactly what does your Sleeping Time app for Twitter does?

A: Well, you see Twitter has become a very popular platform. People post on it several times a day. So from all the times the user is posting you get an average of the times when he/she is posting, so when he is not, we assume they are sleeping. This impressed me a lot because this app actually got very viral and it even got mentioned in CNN.

B: And my last question: What is the role of design in your blog?

A: They say that first impression matters. The look is very important in a blog since it should capture your attention, if your blog is decent, people will want to look at it. But overall, it’s the content that matters. If the viewer is interested in your content they will want to see it again.

Base: Primero Amit, quisieramos desearte un Happy Diwali (aprovechando que fue el fin de año del calendario hindú). En Wikipedia pone que fuiste defensor de la libertad de expresión para acabar con la censura de internet en la India. ¿Es esto cierto? ¿Hasta que punto sería comparable esta censura con la censura de internet que existe en China?

Amit: En 2005 hubo un gran crecimiento en cuanto a blogs y muchos de estos blogs eran de odio, donde cuestionaban la religión e incluso la insultaban. El gobierno decidió eliminar estos blogs pero los blogs eliminados fueron muy pocos. En China la historia esta muy controlada. Por ejemplo, si escribes democracia en el buscador de google estando en China, verás como no te sale nada.

B: ¿A qué perfil esta dirigido tu escuela de blog?

A: Todo el mundo puede escribir un mail asi que todo el mundo puede tener un blog. No necesitas invertir dinero para mantenerlo, solamente un ordenador e internet. Es fácil de manejar y si te va bien puedes buscar patrocinadores o gente que quiera publicitarse en tu blog. Mi objetivo es enseñar que tener un blog es más fácil de lo que parece. Cualquiera puede tener un blog: jubilados, estudiantes, hombres, mujeres ¿Qué más da?

B: ¿Puedes explicarnos que hace exactamente tu aplicación Sleeping Time?

A: Bueno, pues verás Twitter es un medio que se ha popularizado mucho. La gente postea varias veces al día. De todas las veces que un usuario vaye a hacer un tweet/post, se hace una media de cuando escribe asi que cuando no esta posteando se asume que esta durmiendo. Me impresionó porque esta aplicación no tardó en hacerse viral y además fue mencionada en CNN.

B: Y por último: ¿Cual es el rol de la estética en tu blog?

A: Dicen que la primera impresión es importante. Es muy importante una buena estética y una buena estructura para que te miren, pero en realidad es el contenido lo que importa de verdad ya que esto es lo que determina que el usuario quiera entrar otra vez a tu blog.
