An example of the new signage system found around Brooklyn. We are hoping for some sort of force majeure to take them all out

We really, really dislike when things are over designed. Which is why we are outraged about a good idea (downtown Brooklyn neighborhood signage) gone terribly awry. The situation is made worse of course by the fact that most of Base NY’s team live in Brooklyn and have to see this signage on a daily basis. Talk about pouring salt on a wound.

Let’s start with a few basic questions for the designers:
- What’s going on with the logo at the top left? Perhaps it’s to signify a walking tour that this signage is meant to encourage? But don’t the map and historical text kinda convey that?
- Why are the signs angled at the bottom? This is the kind of stuff we just loathe. This, “Gee, this would look cool” approach. Instead they just look bent. Perhaps when delivery trucks run into the signs and REALLY bend the signs, they therefore won’t look so bad.
- Why does it say “Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhoods” (in vertical no less)? Isn’t the audience IN said downtown Brooklyn neighborhood already?

We could go on. But why? What’s done is done. We just hate it when people fuck with Brooklyn, OUR neighborhood, the coolest neighborhood on earth. Shame on your Metrotech BID. Shame on your Marty Markowitz. Shame on you Brooklyn. You should have done better.
