Ryan (right) and a doppelganger make work at the opening of his new show, not because he didn’t get it done in time but because this is Studio Franchise.
Ryan McGinness’s Studio Franchise show opened last night at La Casa Encendida, in Madrid. Installed across La Casa’s three main gallery spaces, the exhibition lives up to its name, with an operational art studio in one space, the works produced there installed on an ongoing basis in the middle room, and a range of recent paintings and sculptures in the third gallery space.
At the opening: Work completed in the show’s gallery space C will be installed on a rolling basis in space B. In this way, the show will not be complete until its final day, April 4.

Saw horses, a staple of Ryan’s horizontal working process, here hold some of his acryllic sculptures. Comprised of different interweaving pieces, these sculptures are different each time they’re installed.

Taking the franchise concept to its furthest: A pair of wigs made of Ryan’s hair will be worn by a series of Ryan doubles who will be working with Ryan and standing in for him through the duration of Studio Franchise.

Released in conjunction with the show is Studio Manual, a book building on the franchise concept with a corporate reference guide detailing the entire world of Ryan McGinness Studios, Inc. Included are a brand and positioning study of Ryan McGinness Studios, Inc., a visual identity standards guide, a human resources document covering everything from hiring to dress code, and a franchise kit and art production standards guide so you, too, can set up your own Ryan McGinness Studios, Inc. studio and make your own Ryan McGinness art.
Ryan designed the book, and worked with Tom of BaseWords to write it. Each of the six sections is printed on a different color paper; illustrations by Peter Cury complement the informational corporate-speak with a personality all their own.
