It is a fascinating time in the world of contemporary art in which the industry kingpins are maneuvering for the eyes and wallets of the masses (albeit the well-to-do ones). On the heels of Phillips de Pury’s announcement of an editorial project, Gagosian Gallery has opened its first-ever retail shop. Located in the same building as its flagship gallery at 980 Madison Ave, the 2500 sq ft bi-level space features a reading lounge, video art projection wall and a handpicked array of art and design items, including books, catalogs, furniture, special edition posters, prints, wallpaper and more by Marc Newson, Jeff Koons, Jean Prouve and Ed Ruscha among others.
There will also be pieces produced exclusively for the store like Richard Prince’s newest limited edition artist book, Bettie Klin.
