The 28th edition of ARCO, the International Contemporary Art Fair, will open in Madrid on February 11, and run through the 16th. Participating will be more than 250 galleries from around the world, with special curatorial emphasis this year on Indian art and galleries. La Casa Encendida, which collaborates with ARCO every year, has programmed several India-related activities around this year’s ARCO.

In December 2008, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, LCE hosted the exhibition Gandhi: My Life Is My Message. Bringing together photographs, unpublished documents, videos, and mementos, the exhibition took visitors on a journey through Gandhi’s remarkable life.

As part of our ongoing work with La Casa Encendida, Base designed the catalog for the exhibition. Taking the exhibition title as a starting point, we designed the catalog as a partial biography of Gandhi, told through the various materials presented in the exhibition.

The material comprising the book—photography, texts, biography—was understood as fragments of information coming from a variety of sources. Our design reflects this by differentiating how each element of the book is presented. Texts, for example, are made to look as if they come directly from various books. Sections of photos, presented as a family album, run in chronological order through the book. Overall, the austere design is guided by the ideology of Gandhi.
