Ryan McGinness’s Studio Franchise show, at La Casa Encendida since February 4, concluded yesterday, having grown to its culmination over its two-month run. For the show’s first month Ryan was stationed in one of the exhibition’s three gallery spaces, working in an operational franchise of his New York studio with a franchise studio staff to make work that was installed in an adjacent gallery space as it was completed. So, while much of the duration of the show presented the franchise at work, the show itself was only at its most complete at the end of its run.
Which is why the Studio Franchise catalog has only just been released. While Ryan was in Madrid, we worked with him to design the catalog, which presents in-progress shots of the exhibition from the beginning, when the moving trucks are arriving at La Casa with the contents of the studio franchise. Also included in the catalog are essays by Paul Laster and Jordi Costa, and an interview between the curator of the show, Adam Jorquera, and Ryan.
